6medium-sizedapples (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
1tablespoonfresh lemon juice
1cuppacked brown sugar
1tablespoonground cinnamon
0.5teaspoonground nutmeg
1cuprolled oats
0.5cupall-purpose flour
0.5cupunsalted butter, melted
0.25teaspoonsalt
0.25cupchopped walnuts (optional, for added crunch)
1servingVanilla ice cream (for serving)
Instructions
Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with a bit of butter or cooking spray to prevent sticking.
In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples with the lemon juice, packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon, and ground nutmeg. Toss everything gently until the apples are well-coated. Once combined, spread the succulent apple mixture evenly into the prepared baking dish, making sure it's evenly distributed.
In another bowl, create the crunchy topping by mixing rolled oats, all-purpose flour, the remaining cinnamon, melted butter, salt, and chopped walnuts (if using). Stir until the mixture forms coarse crumbs that resemble sand.
Take the oat mixture and evenly sprinkle it over the layer of apples in the baking dish, making sure to cover the fruit thoroughly for a balanced texture.
Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the apples are bubbling and the topping has turned a lovely golden brown.
Once baked, remove the dish from the oven and allow it to cool slightly for about 10 minutes before serving. This will allow the flavors to meld beautifully.
Notes
Serve warm with vanilla ice cream and a dusting of cinnamon for extra charm.
